Coast to Coast! Blue Sky here I come!

Scrat Continental Crackup

How I've felt for so long about working in VFX/Anim industry.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

My first project

Done!  After a few weeks of back and forth and interviews I finally landed the job of my dreams, well, for the time being.  Blue Sky has always been on the radar as a potential and it’s finally a reality.  It’s everything I could ask for in an employer and more.

Don’t think that it’s going to stop me from being active on my blog though, quite the opposite!  Well, maybe the first month or two starting now there will be a pause, but after that it will increase.  I’m super excited to learn and share knowledge with people and stay really connected and dedicated to innovating personal and industry wide workflows, tech, and of course animation.  Technical animation and tech art to be specific is what I’ll be working on in the coming months, same as usual.

Thanks to everyone that’s been involved in the process of landing this, you know who you are!  I don’t think they know yet what a valuable asset they just acquired but soon they will find out just how serious I am about the work I do and how inspired I can be!

LA Derby Dolls Fight Crew Vs. Varsity Brawlers

Taking a minute to test out video blogging from my iPhone and to say what an awesome event Derby Dolls puts on. Honestly, I can’t remember when I had that much fun! If you’ve been putting it off you really need to get diwn there ASAP befor they lose their hot streak! Fear not, they are ranked third in their division and they winning against the Brawlers who were 2nd in the division means the Fight Crew could be ranked higher now. It was a close and exciting match but the LADD Fight Crew pulled a victory in the end with 100 points. Very good stuff indeed, and who doesn’t want to go see roller derby, a crap load of ladies (a lot of whom look similar to the suicide girls) brawling on roller skates going 90 miles an hour around a claustrophobically short track!?

Fight Crew sheer jubilation, I mean LOOK at her.

Succulent New Tron Stills and Concept Art

Some really hi res images were released today from Disney.  Check ‘em out!  Yep, I have high expectations.  I give into the hype.  Not one to say that normally, but when the art is this good…

All Six Star Wars Films in Stereo 3D

Leia Organa Holographic

Still not as good as a 3d holographic?

Straight from the source: ILM Visual Effects posted on their Twitter something that is surely going to have people blogging up a storm tomorrow if not tonight–Starting 2012, all six, count ‘em, Star Wars films are going to be in 3D.  Un-effing-believable.  A major feat, yes, but surely there will be an outcry against it from the people in the industry already tired of 3D.  Also, what about the declining numbers of people going to see Stereoscopic movies these days??  Something has to be said as well about movies that acquire the 3D makeover and how cookie-cutter they look.  Maybe we should stay tuned to see if ILM is going to unveil something to improve the tiring experience of watching these, dare I use the term, films ;) .

Book Trailer: The Making of Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back

via Hollywood Reporter – There’s a fantastic book coming out about the making of The Empire Strikes Back this October 12.  It looks like historical art and artifacts that were unearthed from the cavernous Lucasfilm libraries will be exposed in all their glory for film makers, fans, and young jedis to enjoy and learn.  What an exciting opportunity to learn of how the beauty of the film came about artistically with all of the unseen financial and logistical constraints that almost thwarted the film’s release.

Anime Mythology: Mystics, Priestesses and Warrior Women

Vidiots Annex – Film Studies - Anime Mythology

Instructor: Crispin Freeman

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Adolescenece of Utena

Synopsis from Vidiots Website:

These are elaborate and humorous Power Point-style presentations with slides and video that explore the differences in animated and video game storytelling in Japanese and American cultures.

My Perspective

I really had a great experience at a smaller gathering of anime enthusiasts at Vidiots Annex this Tuesday.  Watch this video to get a sense of what happens during Crispin’s energetic and informative presentations.  It’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what one of these presentations actually consist of.  Highly metaphysical and based on Jungian theories of archetypal figures and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey, Crispin delves into the cultural aspects and differentiations of anime and western animation with clarity and style.

The Tracy Fragments

With: Ellen Page as Tracey Berkowitz
Written: Maureen Medved (novel)
Maureen Medved (screenplay)
Directed: Bruce McDonald

Showing: The Newport Beach Film Festival – April 24 – May 1, 2008

My Blurb: Looks like another interesting LOOKING film with the beautiful and talented Ellen Page. I’m already hooked on the very interesting and fragmented ways the frame is composed. I do love the movies with settings in rural America. Call me sentimental. You can take the boy out of the country but not the country out of the boy, whole bit –whatever. I’m going to watch for this one.
